We continue from our last posts where we discussed “Keep Moving But when …. why …. where?” and answered to “When"
Now lets come to "Why"..
But “Why” to move? When my
body is telling me not to move this body part, why should I move?
Consider a door with a good oiled hinges. I use this door
daily. But for a period of time, I had to move out of my house. So the house is
closed and the door is not used till the day I return. After returning back
when I open this door, it cracks as there is rust on the hinges. It doesn’t
move well. Same is the result for our body. If we are not using any part for
some time, it RUSTS 1.
Without appropriate movement, the optimal activity of the
part gets reduced.
For example, consider a simple condition of knee pain. Due
to the pain, I will stop moving my knee. When I stop moving my knee, changes in
the joint structure start happening. The surrounding muscles start getting weak
as I am not using them optimally. Now due to changes in joint structure, muscle
weakness and so on I won’t be able to move knee. So it becomes a vicious cycle.
Answer to “Why”: We
should move so that our body part won’t RUST.
In this way we answered “When” and “Why”.
1: This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t rest
when it is indicated. As if we don’t rest when medically indicated we might
cause more harm to the part.
